The age-old adage holding that a community can accomplish grandiose thing only when its members are firmly united was proven right once again by the people of the obscure upland barangay of Itaran when in 1980, against the back draft of political turmoil and insurgency problem; compounded by lingering offshoot of an economy gone haywire; a small highly motivated pack of community stakeholders led by the then principal of the nearby Itaran Elementary school, and now municipal councilors and ABC president, Jose A. Zamora, paved the way for the founding of Itaran National High School.
The story goes that arriving in Barangay Itaran in 1976 as a newly promoted principal of the Itaran Elementary School from his prior assignment as head teacher of Cepres Elementary School, which he also started in 1969.Moved by the perennial sight of overly burdened; yet zealous young secondary school student passing by the school en route to a nearest high school located some nine (9) kilo meters away, he set his sight once again to doing the colossal task of starting up a new school. Unfazed even by the prevailing belligerent milieu, he set the wheels of change in motion by convening some of very responsible people; namely: Fidel Sarandon, who was then the chairman of Barangay Itaran, Benito Barquez,Cezar Samlero also of Brangay Itaran, Napoleon Base of Barangay Balaba and Jose Sarsale of Baragay Buyo to name a few to lay out the plans and course of action which ultimate led to the founding of another school, a secondary school in barangay Itaran.
The momentous year come in 1980 when Itaran Barangay High School finally saw the light of the day by virtue of R.A 6054; otherwise known as the Barrio High School Chapter. However, still bereft of an owned site, the first batch of first year high school students numbering about forty five (45) who enrolled in June of 1980 found temporary accommodation in the nearby Itaran Elementary School. A year later, through a series of film showing to crowd-pleasing beauty contests spearheaded by pioneering PTA headed by Napoleon Base, funds enough to purchase the vacant lot measuring about five thousand square meters (5,000 sq. m.)Located just across the elementary school and owned by Alejandro Victoria were finally raised.
The Lot where the school now stands was finally purchased on March 16,1981 with the amount of purchased pegged at Ten Thousand Pesos (Php 10,000.00). The site was chosen among other proposed sites not only on the account of accessibility; it being closely adjacent with the provincial road; but also because the vicinity with the elementary school ensuring facility of supervision on the part of elementary school principal who act as the assistant principal of the newly established high school; and likewise on the part of its pioneer teachers who were regular elementary school teachers having only part time teaching loads in the newly opened secondary school.
That very same year, with the number of students expected to thrill in the coming years, the school assistant principal, with the collaboration of the PTA , sought the assistance of the then provincial governor Felix Imperial , who favourably responded by promptly funding the construction of the school first three rooms. Soon, other donations in the form of additional concrete classrooms and other infrastructures started to turn up. Recently, a much awaited expansion of the of the school site maybe in the offing with the now proposed donation by the provincial government of an additional three hundred seventy five square meters (374 sq. m.) lot owned by it which is located adjacent to, and contiguous with the school site.
Itaran National High School has indeed counting its blessings. Aside from improved physical facilities which now include state of the art computer laboratory; the school brags of a rising quantity of enrolees with its passing school year. Further, the school now has an extension in Barangay Maysua now also rearing its twelve years of fruitful operation which is truly monumental testament to its untiring service to its clientele who, among others come from barangay Cepres, Maynaga, Gamot, Pinagdapugan, Balaba, Lidong, Amoguis, Anopol, Kinuartelan, Cotmon, Sta. Cruz, Buyo, Pintor, Barangay Cagmaslog, San Vicente, San Antonio, Buhi Camarines Sur and Itaran and 65% from a nearby barangay of the upland area.

To better serve the school community, the former Principal I of Itaran National High School, Jesus V. Locaba, the former School Head of Itaran Elementary School, Teodoro Recierdo, together with the PSDS and DepEd Albay Engineer and concerned parties convened on January 11, 2017 to discuss the proposed Senior High School Building.
The proposal was in accordance with the DepEd order No. 51, s., 2015 stating the Guidelines on the Implementation of the SHS Program in Existing Public JHS and ISS, Establishment of Stand-Alone Public SHSS, and Conversion of Existing Public Elementary and JHSS into Stand-Alone SHS.
Prior to the meeting, the ocular inspection and assessment of the site at Itaran National High School, Polangui, Albay by the DepEd Engineer and the Engineer of Contractor Hi-Tone Construction and Development Corporation construction firm otherwise proved that the proposed site did not meet the construction qualification due to very limited buildable space.
However, the determination of both Itaran National High School and Itaran Elementary school in realizing the construction of a senior high building did not allow the limited buildable space to become the hindrance. An answer from the elementary school was to share its land for the SHS building to be established.
The Senior High School currently offers two tracks which are Technical-Vocational and Livelihood Program (TVL) and General Academic Strand (GAS). At present it has eight competent and able teachers headed by Myra O. Lipnica, the Senior High School Coordinator.
The Itaran Senior High School building was inaugurated on February 9, 2018. On the other hand, Itaran National High School is set to commemorate the SHS founding every 10th of October.
